Installed a customer-supplied kitchen faucet

She calls us from Lowes, while waiting in line to purchase a cheapo Moen kitchen faucet. That wasn't the problem, though.

The problem was what a local plumbing company did to her before she found Ball Plumbing. They quoted pre-tax $479.00 installed for a similar faucet or $279.00, if she bought the faucet. When she balked, they charged her $49.00 call out charge.

I installed her kitchen faucet for the one hour minimum of $132.00, pre-tax. Took 40 minutes.

So, her cost was roughly $250.00 using our plumbing service and buying her own cheapo faucet. She saved $229.00 off the top. Well, add in the $49.00 service charge and it's lowered to $180.00, but that's still a savings.

If she would have bought our really nice stock model Delta kitchen faucet, her cost would have been pre-tax $375.00 for a really nice kitchen faucet. But, that's still $125.00 more than she wanted to spend in her Roosevelt neighborhood home.

Ball Plumbing charges $132.00 for the first hour, which includes travel and one hour of labor.

For each additional 15 minutes, it costs $22.00.

Really, it's cheap at half the price.......yuck yuck.

Sewer Stoppage Charge

How much does it cost to unclog a sewer stoppage?

In 2010: $254.73 (Using the 2010 price book)
In 2014: $245.21 (Using the new hourly rate, as outlined below)

The drain stoppage I did yesterday took 90 minutes from arrival to getting paid. I had to search for the sewer access and then I ran the snake twice the full 100' to the city sewer.

That doesn't include the 5 minutes taking/processing the job order or the 20 minutes to drive there. Those costs are included in the first hour.

Plumber labor break down: $132.00/first hour. $44.00 for additional 30 minutes ($22.00/per 15 minutes) = $176.00

Equipment charge: $50.00 (The big sewer machine)

Tax: $19.21

Total: $245.21

That was for nearly 2 hours (if you include travel), plus equipment. It would have been faster if I didn't have to spend all that time searching for the sewer clean out. Plus, I had to clear the utility closet out to access the sewer clean out.

Ball Plumbing Gets a Complaint

All our prices and charges are on our website: www.ballplumbing.net/services.html

We try to be as honest and transparent as possible, but recently we had a complaint from a landlord over an  overtime bill of $292.12, including tax. All charges were told to him and his tenant. He agreed to the prices.

The invoice break down:

Overtime Rate (09/08/12): $99.00 per hour x 2 hours: $198.00
Equipment Charge: $25.00
Trip Charge: $45.00
Tax: $24.12
Total: $292.12

I'll break it down further:

Overtime Rate (09/08/12): $99.00 per hour x 2 hours: $198.00. At that time, we were charging $66.00 per hour with 30 minute increments. O.T. is charged 50% more to bring the hourly rate to $99.00/hour. Still a deal at any time.

Equipment Charge: $25.00. Every plumbing company I've ever worked for charges for equipment and we're still far below what anyone charges. Try to rent an electrical 3/8th snake machine, an extension ladder, and 150' of electrical cord from Hardware Sales and see what it will cost you (a lot more than $25.00).

Trip Charge: $45.00. I wish we didn't have to charge that, but the cost of running a truck is almost prohibitive now. (my rant about gasoline and insurance deleted).

Tax: $24.12. Tax is 9%.

Total: $292.12 The total for that Sunday job is what most companies charge for regular time and good luck trying to reach them on a Sunday afternoon.

Ball Plumbing labor rates increase

We're raising the Ball Plumbing plumber labor rates to $88.00 an hour after having it $66.00 an hour for a long time. The increase will put us just below market rates.

Commercial plumbing accounts will remain at the old rates for now and will continue to be based on past business totals.

The new minimum is $133.00. It includes one (1) hour of labor and the $45.00 service charge.
Plumbing apprentice or laborer rates increase to $44.00 an hour.
The 15 minute time increments will remain.
The $45.00 plumbing service charge remains.

Overtime plumber labor rates will remain 50% ($132.00/hour) for after 5:00pm and weekends.

The parts mark ups will remain 50% over our cost for plumbing products under $100.00 and 100% for items over $100.00. Our plumbing parts costs are mostly retail costs.

The price book (contract prices or flat rate) is based on the $66.00 price and will stay like that for now. We may charge extra for parts and part collection, as those prices have risen dramatically.

The website will be updated with these prices soon.

Bellingham Herald Blurb

This is from the 12/4/2011, Sunday edition:

• In an effort to provide customers more flexibility, Ball Plumbing recently added a new payment option, a time and material rate. The company typically used a flat rate on a project, which it will continue to do, but the hourly-plus-parts rate is helpful for unusual projects, said Robert Yancey of Ball Plumbing. Details about the option can be found at ballplumbing.net.
